Lappajärvi was born 78 million years ago when asteroid that orbited the Sun for about 4.5 billion years crushed with another similar orbit between Mars and Jupiter. As the result, a piece of 1km in diameter crushed the Earth at a cosmic speed (about 10-40km/sec) destroying all life within hundreds of kilometers. The result was a crater: 22km in diameter with deepness of 750 meters, which has later been transformed into Lake Lappajärvi.
Meteorite Center is located downstairs of the hotel Kivitippu.
The exhibition is divided into eight parts. You can touch real meteors and see a real sample from the Moon. At the reception of the hotel you can watch a virtual presentation of the birth of Lappajärvi. The presentation lasts couple of minutes.
Accessibility: The exhibition is located on the ground floor of Hotel Kivitippu and is free of charge.
