FACTS ABOUT
Impact Craterlake Geopark

Lappajärvi is a lake in South Ostrobothnia, Finland.

A brilliant shooting star instantly turned into a nightmare when a meteorite, that struck Earth 78 million years ago, gave birth to a huge crater what is now Lappajärvi.

Lappajärvi is:

  • Europe’s largest impact crater lake

  • the best-preserved impact crater in Finland: the south-eastern rim (Lakeaharju–Pyhävuori), the central uplift (Kärnä Island) and impactites exposed and accessible

  • the youngest impact crater in Finland (78 million years)

  • the longest (since 1858), the first identified (in 1968) and most thoroughly studied impact crater in Finland: almost all evidence of impact discovered, including the first impact diamonds in Fennoscandia (in 1998).
