SUOKONMÄKI TOWER - GREAT ARCHITECTURE OF AN ANCIENT ISLAND
The Suokonmäki tower is 31m high and there are 132 steps leading to the covered platform at the top. The observation tower built in 2001 impresses with its architecture.
When looking at the stunning scenery you might think for a moment that after the Ice Age, the Suonmäki hill was the only Geopark area that was not covered with water. Today it is 234 m.a.s.l. The hill Raitamäki in Soini (240 m.a.s.l.) experienced the same.
Spears left by hunters hunting for seals back in the day were found in the berms which are located under the Suokonmäki hill. Suokonmäki hill has been the oldest settlement in Ostrobothnia and has been inhabited since the 16th century.
The tower offers spectacular views towards both Järviseutu and Ähtäri. It is said that during good weather you can see the towers of the seven churches. The fields and housing in Suokonmäki form a valuable cultural landscape.
By the tower there are toilets and an old house built in the style typical for Ostrobothnia.
