LAINEKALLIO - ANCIENT COASTLINE ON THE WAVES

Lainekallio is part of a larger, partly moraine covered rocky hill on the southwest side of Lappajärvi, 15 km south from the centre. There is a small, well developed, ancient stone field at the southern end of the hill (50 m long and 20 m wide).

There are clearly visible, about half a meter high berms from which the hill apparently got its name.

Berm sizes vary between 10 and 30 cm. Rocks are rounded - typical for this area gneisses and slates, pegmatites and grained granite rocks.

Stone field was formed when the glacier receded from the area and the hill rose to water level.  Coastal forces washed away the moraine surface and rounded the rocks.  There are several layered berms on the nearby heaths with another, smaller stone field in Västerpyynkallio, 500 meters northwest.

While walking in Lainekallio you will also notice old traps (pits), which in the Middle Ages served as storage places for hunters during their expeditions.  At the end of the 19th century this type of a trap was banned.

Note! The stone field is mostly covered with lichen and you should avoid stepping on these areas (especially during dry season).

The beautiful shape of the field appears when you look at it from the sides.
