POKELANTIE SIGHTS

Along the Pokelantie street in Vimpeli you will see beautiful views of the surrounding area and impact crater lake. By stopping at the Katajalahti observation tower and the Military School Monument, You will travel 78 million years back when stopping by Katajalahti observational tower and the Military School monument …

… 78 million years ago, to the southeast and south of Pokela, the rim of the crater used to be much higher than it is today. The edge was also steeper and very unstable so it collapsed not long after. This created a terraced edge structure typical for large impact craters.

The original height of the crater rim cannot be determined. However, the height on the surface of the bedrock varies by about 175 meters between Lakeaharju and Pokela.

Two bedrock drillings were done in the Pokela area: one by sewage treatment plant and the other a few hundred meters west of Pokelantie street. The first one is scientifically fascinating as it tells the story of ancient Finland that is not told anywhere alse. Impact craters are almost the only places in Finland were you can find deposits older than the last glaciation period, but younger than the ancient bedrock.

More info: Kraatterijärven Georeitti, destination 17

The Pokela fields hide stories of falling asteroids, collapsing rocks, ancient seas, lakes, rivers, and glaciers. Since the most interesting geology of Pokela is underground, the Kraatterijärvi Georeitti destination point was placed by the Vimpeli Military School monument. School operated from December 26, 1917 to January 14, 1918. It is believed that the school began training reserve officers in Finland.
